The Chief of Staff Revolution
The Chief of Staff role in Europe is having a moment. And honestly? It's about time.
Deloitte and SDA Bocconi have just published some really compelling research, 'The Chief of Staff Revolution across Europe in the AI Era', and so much of it resonated with me.
The headline? Europe is not the US. Not even close. In America, the CoS role has recognised clear professional identity. Over here, we're still on that journey. Too often the role gets shaped around the person in it rather than the other way around and quickly the boundaries get blurry, potential gets lost, and the person in it can feel pretty isolated.
Sound familiar?
🔹 France has deeply embraced the role at the highest levels.
🔹 Germany is growing fast but still finding its feet.
🔹 And the UK? We're leading the way in Europe and with that comes a real responsibility to shape what good looks like.
But even here, so many brilliant Chiefs of Staff are still struggling to articulate their value, own their remit, and plan what comes next. Without recognised professional standards, that's a tough place to be.
And it's exactly why I started BeCoS. Chiefs of Staff, EA’s, Business Managers, (and anyone doing a similar role without the title), deserve a proper framework, community, and career path that reflects just how much they contribute.
The CoS role is growing. We are just getting started.
Does this reflect your experience? What's still missing for you?
I would love to hear your thoughts.
